Hippocrates, as many of you may recall, is considered the father of scientific medicine. His revelation started our modern medical understanding that disease was not a punishment inflicted by the gods but rather the product of environmental factors, diet, and living habits. In fact, one of the quotes most frequently attributed to him is “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
Interestingly, Hippocrates probably never said those exact words. Even when one considers that we’re reading an English translation of a Latin translation of ancient Greek text, the quote still probably isn’t accurate. Nevertheless, Hippocrates DID write a lot about the impact of diet on health. For instance he wrote “In food excellent medication, in food bad medication, bad and good relatively” indicating that good food is healthful and bad food is not. Yet here we are 2,500 years later wondering why a diet full of processed junk food is making us sick.
In writing the Hippocratic Oath, he literally made doctors promise to educate and encourage their patients to position diet as a prime component of good health when they utter the line “I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgement…” So, while Hippocrates may have never said “medicine is food” it’s abundantly clear that he considered good diet to be a prime component of maintaining good health, and vice-versa. It was in this very spirit that we began to create our broth and interesting ways to consume it as part of a healthy diet.
Our mission is to help educate people on the benefits of bone broth and provide useful ways to use it as part of a healthy diet, acknowledging the centuries of history that provide substantial evidence of how beneficial bone broth can be. We hope you found this information interesting and would be very pleased if you’d give our products and recipes a try!
